HISTORY

It is the local branch of the world-wide Rotary International organisation. There are now over one and a quarter million men and women in 31,561 Clubs and 166 countries worldwide. For some 30 years or so the Club has maintained a sea-side bungalow to give holidays to disadvantaged or disabled people who would not otherwise be able to holiday.

It has distributed locally telephone ‘Lifelines’ to help the elderly summon help in times of need.

In 1988 when there were 350,000 cases, Rotary International decided Rotarians would aim to eradicate polio everywhere.   In the ensuing 15 years they have raised millions of pounds to fund teams of doctors, nurses and volunteers in vaccinating the World’s under-5’s against the dreaded disease, under the guidance of the World Health Organisation. The end is in sight. Polio has now gone from Europe, the Americas and the Pacific Rim region. Last year there were 1918 cases in the world, mainly in the Indian sub-continent and in Central Africa , but that figure at 1st October 2003 is down to 383 cases. The work goes on.  New Milton has fully played its part in the great endeavour.

The Club is always on the look out for men or women of standing in their trade or profession and encourage all members to become involved in the club’s activities and projects. If you think you might be interested to join us and to meet some new friends, let us know.
